Khol Khel emerges from a lineage that has consistently engaged with enterprise, social responsibility, and cultural continuity.

In the 1880s, Manna Lal Ji Sureka moved from Rajasthan to Bengal and established himself as a trader. Over time, he built four residential buildings in Kolkata’s Burrabazar, dedicating one to a charitable trust.

His grandson, Shyam Lal Ji Sureka, went on to pioneer the manufacturing of narrow fabrics in India in 1946. Alongside his business, he founded the Durga Dutt Sureka Smriti Nidhi, supporting work in education, social welfare, and the preservation of cultural practices.

Continuing this trajectory, Khol Khel was founded in 2021. It is being built by us as the next generation, carrying forward a way of thinking shaped by enterprise, social responsibility, and cultural engagement.

This journey across generations informs Khol Khel’s work today—where craft, culture, and play are approached as living practices, shaped through both making and participation.
