How to Play
1. Setup & Deal
Mix the circular cards face-down on a flat surface (traditionally swirled together rather than shuffled). Deal the entire deck counter-clockwise, four cards at a time, until all players have equal hands. The active trump suit depends on the time of play: Rama suit during the day and Krishna suit at night.
2. Card Ranks & Mechanics
Each suit contains 12 cards:
-
Court Cards: King (Raja) is highest, followed by the Minister (Pradhan/Wazir).
-
Pip Cards (1–10): In Strong Suits (Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana), 1 is higher than 10. In Weak Suits (Parasurama, Rama, Balarama, Buddha, Kalki), 10 is higher than 1.
3. Playing a Round
-
Lead: The player holding the King of the active trump suit leads the first trick.
-
Trick-Taking: Players must follow the led suit if possible. The highest card of the led suit—or the highest trump—takes the trick.
-
Sequences (Dukkaal): A leader holding a King and consecutive lower cards can play them all at once. Opponents must match the number of cards, and the leader automatically wins the entire trick without trump interference.
4. Scoring & Winning
The winner of a trick leads the next. Continue playing until all cards are exhausted. Count your collected cards—the player with the most tricks at the end of three rounds claims ultimate victory!
